Since the pandemic began, pet ownership has been on the rise as people have taken on “pandemic pets” to make up for isolation and beat the lockdown blues — over 93,000 pedigreed puppies were born and registered with the Philippine Canine Club in 2020.
On the other hand, aspins (short for “asong Pinoy” or Filipino dog) — AKA mutts, AKA mixed breed dogs, AKA the best breed in the world — are often overlooked because of their lack of pedigree or fancy papers. But they are some of the sweetest and smartest dogs around, and are just as deserving of a good home and family.
The Philippine Animal Welfare Society’s (PAWS) latest campaign with actress Heart Evangelista promotes exactly that. For their Have a Heart for Aspins, the actress is seen posing with her dog Panda — a black-and-white aspin and himself a social media darling with over 58K followers on Instagram — with messages of responsible pet ownership.

On their Facebook page, PAWS wrote, “It’s a good day for the animals because our new digital billboards are up in EDSA and C5 with PAWS spokesperson, Heart Evangelista and Panda, reminding everyone to “Have a Heart for Aspins” and to always be a responsible pet owner by having your pets spayed or neutered #adoptdontshop”.
The actress even shared the sighting on her Instagram stories.
It truly is a good day for the animals.
