Pundits have long been saying that Liberal Party standard bearer Mar Roxas should stop trying to pretend that he’s an average Pinoy when he clearly comes from a privileged background and has most likely never worried about making ends meet for one single moment in his life.
“Roxas is the grandson of the late former President Manuel Roxas and a scion of the wealthy Araneta clan. His background has been a source of criticism from those saying he doesn’t have empathy for the poor,” reports Elizabeth Marcelo on GMA News Online.
Roxas’ camp may have finally listened to what people have been saying, as Roxas gave an as-real-as-it-gets closing statement in the first Pilipinas Debates 2016 held in Cagayan De Oro City on Sun, Feb 21.
Roxas had this to say in his one-minute closing statement wherein he had to explain why he was the most worthy to be elected as President: “Bakit ko gustong maging pangulo? Maraming mga pagkakataon sa buhay ko alam ko wala sa mamayang Pilipino.
“May trabaho ako, may naipon ako. Alam kong maayos ang kinabukasan ng anak ko dahil nakapag-aral siya. ‘Pag may nakasakit sa pamilya namin, kampante ako na may gagamot sa kanila.
“Hindi ko pinoproblema ang kakainin ko sa bukas. Bakit ko gusto maging Pangulo? Dahil gusto ko maging ganito din ang buhay niyo. Malaya sa gutom, malaya sa takot, malayang mangarap.”
Translation: “Why do I want to be President? I have had many opportunities in my life that have not been given to Filipinos. I have a job, I have savings. I know that my child’s future is secure because he is getting an education. When someone our family is sick, I know that they will get medical help. I don’t worry about what I’m going to eat the next day. So, why do I want to be Presient? Because I want this life for you, too. Free from hunger, free from fear, free to dream.”
Wow, like, we almost had tears in our eyes.
