So for several minutes this afternoon, we got a sneak peek of the end of the world. Kidding. But it almost felt like it, when websites including Facebook, Instagram, and Tinder went down at around 3pm, Manila time.

“Hacking group Lizard Squad — which recently claimed responsibility for a Christmas day attack on Playstation and Xbox Live services — said on Twitter that is was responsible for the problems,” reports Skynews.com.

The report continues: “A member of the group, who has previously spoken to Sky News about the Christmas hack, posted a message for ‘all the mad people.’

“In a Twitter photo, he holds up a sheet of paper with ‘DOX ME’ written on it — an apparent reference to ‘doxxing,’ a slang term for dumping personal data online.”

Instagram has acknowledged the problem on Twitter, but Facebook has yet to issue a statement about it.

Techcrunch published Facebook’s statement: “Earlier this evening many people had trouble accessing Facebook and Instagram. This was not a result of a third party attack but instead occured after we introduced a change that affected our configuration systems. We moved quickly to fix the problem, and both services are back to 100% for everyone.”
