Grab Philippines announced yesterday that it will deactivate at least 8,000 active driver-partners from its ride-hailing app by June 10 because those drivers failed to submit their complete requirements for driving under the law.
The company said the driver accounts that will be deactivated belong to those who have not submitted proof that they have acquired provisional authority, or certificate of public convenience, from the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB), The Philippine Daily Inquirer reported.
In December, the LTFRB opened 20,000 slots for transport network vehicle service (TNVS) drivers, ABS-CBN News reported. Those who have applied have until June 7 to complete the application requirements.
As reported by CNN Philippines, Grab Philippines President Brian Cu said that deactivation would inconvenience “many Filipinos,” since the move will “reduce the number of vehicles servicing our commuting public.”
However, he said that the inconvenience will only be temporary because the LTFRB will open 10,000 TNVs slots starting June 10.
“At the end of the day, many Filipinos will suffer from this painful step – both the drivers and the passengers. We would want to avoid this from happening, but we are bound to comply with our regulator,” Cu was quoted saying by Inquirer.
There are currently 45,000 TNVS drivers registered under Grab Philippines.
