Good vibes: Honest airport staff rewarded

Two airport staff members who returned about PHP920,000 worth of cash to its rightful owners in separate incidents were rewarded and hailed as heroes.

One of them, a taxi driver who returned a bag containing PHP220,000, will soon have his harelip fixed.

A tweet by assistant secretary Cherry Mercado said Transport Secretary Arthur Tugade already called a “friend doctor” from Asian Hospital to fix the harelip of 71-year-old Antonio Infanta.

Infanta returned the bag of Benjamin Cantanero, a departing passenger. The bag contained P220,000 in cash and travel documents.

Airport police Jamie Estrella, whose phone was used to contact Infanta, said Cantanero rewarded Infanta for his honesty before proceeding to his flight.

Meanwhile, a post by the department’s official Twitter account showed Tugade hugging wheelchair attendant Rizaldy Ocde, who returned a bag with more than PHP700,000.

Overseas Filipino worker Mary Jane Gane misplaced her bag with more than PHP700,000 in cash and valuables in NAIA Terminal 3. Airport police Colonel William Dolot said Gane came from a currency exchange booth. She intends to use the money to purchase a house for her family.

Ocde found Gane’s bag and notified Dolot. The bag was returned to Gane after authorities verified with the currency exchange booth and the airport CCTV.
