Criminals are so creative!

“Globe Telecom warned mobile subscribers not to fall for a modus operandi involving calls coming from supposed Globe agents asking customers to turn off their mobile phones for network-related updates,” reports The Philippine Star.

According to the report, Globe issued the warning following a report of “an attempt by criminals to extract a ransom payment for a kidnapping that never happened.”

What did criminals do?

1. They’ll call you and ask you to turn off your phone for a few hours for some bogus network update.

2. Once your phone is turned off, the criminals then get in touch with your family and say they have kidnapped you.

3. Your family will try to reach you, of course. But how can they when you turned off your phone?

4. The criminals ask your family to deposit money into the criminals’ bank account as soon as possible so you would be returned safely.

Globe general counsel Froilan Castelo explained that they “would never ask its customers to turn off their cell phones for any network-related purpose and those who receive such calls should immediately report the numbers used for the call.”

Castelo added that “customers who receive suspicious calls from persons claiming to be Globe agents should clarify with our customer service personnel.”
