MANILA, Philippines – GlobalPort Batang Pier claimed a twice-to-beat bonus going to the quarterfinals of the PBA Governors’ Cup by thwarting the Alaska Aces in overtime, 117-104, on Tuesday.
Terrence Romeo scored 10 of his 14 points in the extended period to lift the Batang Pier past the league-leading Aces.
Jarrid Famous top-scored GlobalPort with 34 points to go with his 26 rebounds and three assists. The Batang Pier also got additional kick from Stanley Pringle with 24 markers and Omar Krayem with 20.
But it was Romeo’s offensive push in the final five minutes that knocked the wind out of Alaska.
GlobalPort joined other Top 4 teams Alaska, San Miguel Beer and Rain or Shine, as they enjoy a twice-to-beat advantage in the quarterfinals.
The Batang Pier were staring at a 40-49 halftime deficit but their fortunes turned around in the third quarter when Famous began asserting his might.
GlobalPort was already up by seven points going into the payoff period but Cyrus Baguio and Chris Banchero rallied the Aces to a five-point lead, 96-91, with two minutes to go before regulation.
Krayem knocked down a triple and Pringle drained the much-needed free throw shots to force the overtime.
But things went awry for Alaska in the added five minutes where it was only able to nail two baskets.
Baguio finished the game with 20 points, while Romeo Travis was limited to just 12. Banchero and Erik Menk had 10 each for the Aces.
