Perhaps, due to the holidays, this story didn’t get as much attention. But that doesn’t make it less terrifying.
“At around 1am on Sunday, Dec 29, Police Officers 1 Bryan Mara and Arnel Pugong were manning the Bagong Barrio police precinct along with several barangay officials and watchmen in Barangay 132 in Bagong Barrio, Caloocan when concerned citizens alerted them to a street fight reportedly involving members of the Sawako and Demons gangs,” reports Rey Galupo in The Philippine Star.
In their attempt to break up the skirmish, Mara was shot in the leg. Meanwhile, bangay tanod Antonio Adap was hit in the chest and bystander Wison Malig got hurt when a bullet grazed his abdomen.
Mara and Pugong shot dead Sawako member Mark Joseph Yekla, 24, and Demons member John Chrisford Leyno, 19. Both gang members died in the hospital.
Surprisingly, as the report revealed, “no arrests were made. Mara and Pugong were placed under restrictive custody pending the investigation of the incident.”
