Gang leader on the run finally nabbed after robbing cop

It’s tragic, almost-comic, and very complicated.

“At around 330 pm on Tuesday, Dec 10, Jonathan Cuya jumped out of a window of his alleged gang’s safe house in Barangay Balingasa when the police tried to serve a warrant for his arrest at around 3:30 p.m., said Chief Inspector Rodelio Marcelo, head of the Quezon City Police District-Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit (QCPD-CIDU),” reports Janvic Mateo in The Philippine Star.

About two hours after escaping from the law enforcers, Cuya and his gang reportedly robbed a policeman in Quezon City. The report revealed that “Senior Police Officer 4 Mario Jamero, who owns a truck hauling business and is assigned to the Police Security and Protection Group, said the suspects took his PHP500,000 Rolex watch, two gold rings worth PHP50,000, a PHP35,000 gold necklace, and a PHP35,000 gold bracelet.”

According to Jamero, he and his wife “went to Mindanao Avenue in his Ford Everest to come to the aid of his driver, who reported that the bumper of the truck he was driving fell off.” The suspects overpowered him and his wife when they got out of the vehicle.

Cuya and his accomplices—Jaime Barcelon, 36; Bhal Katian, 45; Martin Ivan Diaz, 23; Alvin Alcantara, 31; and Elmer Barcelon, 34—were eventually arrested. Among the items recovered from them were a homemade shotgun, a sword, a .22 caliber handgun, a gun replica, a homemade revolver, bullets, and several cell phones.

We have to admit though that this story has spawned two questions. No. 1: “How can a cop (even when he’s off-duty) go out of the house with that much bling?” and No. 2: “A sword? Seriously?”
