One of the best things about travel is all the surprises the world can and will throw at you. This is exactly what a group of MA students out on a Eurotrip experienced at their Berlin pitstop.
Twenty-four year old Asnin Pendatun and his friends went for a quick break at the Dunkin Donuts in the Holocaust Memorial. They felt right at home, specially since they were all together and speaking in their native tongue, when lo and behold the fully bearded German dude behind the counter joined their conversation — in Tagalog.
“He asked us if we are Filipinos,” Pendatun, who uploaded the video of their encounter on Facebook, tells Coconuts Manila. “My friend replied yes and said she’s from Manila. Then Norman said he knows Manila and that he stayed in Cebu. And then he started to speak in Bisaya.”
Correct that: He started to speak in fluent Bisaya.
Apparently, Norman the German guy lived in Cebu for a solid 20 years. He only moved back to Germany eight months ago.
In the video, Norman was telling the Pinoy barkading that he studied psychology at the Cebu Doctors’ University, but his units unfortunately aren’t credited in Germany.
When asked if he plans to return to the Philippines, Norman says he may go back for vacation next year.
Pendatun felt compelled to take a video their most pleasant encounter, and then uploaded it on Facebook.
And then it went batshit viral.
According to Pendatun, Norman added him on Facebook soon after the encounter. After thanking him for the post, the German considered shutting the video down because of all the bad comments he was getting. “Like why somebody who studied in CDU, which is a posh school in Cebu, ended up selling donuts,” Pendatun continues. “I told him, it’s his call and I’m very willing to shut it down but he eventually decided to leave it on.”
As of this writing, four days since it’s been uploaded, the one-minute video been shared 11,442 times.
