Former Commission on Elections (COMELEC) chair Sixto Brillantes Jr. died today. He was 80.
COMELEC spokesman James Jimenez announced that the former government official passed away at a little past 11am. Jimenez did not say the cause of the former chair’s death, but in a Facebook post that appeared last month, the former chair’s daughter Zeena Brillantes said that Sixto had been intubated due to COVID-19. He was supposed to celebrate his 81st birthday three days from now.
Current COMELEC chair Andres Bautista has sent his condolences to his predecessor’s family.
“I join the COMELEC family in honoring former chairman Sixto Brillantes Jr, one of our country’s beacons in respect of election management and legal practice. May his memory be a blessing and inspiration for election aficionados now and in the years to come,” Bautista said.
Sixto was COMELEC chair from January 2011 to February 2015. His father, Sixto Brillantes Sr., also worked at the COMELEC as a commissioner.
