A former Chinese government officer wanted for corruption charges was caught in Pasay after hiding in the Philippines for a year.
Local authorities presented the fugitive, identified as 49-year-old Xie Haojie, at a press conference today.
According to the Philippine Star, a PHP11 billion (US$ 210.736 million) corruption case has been filed against Xie in Beijing.
He was arrested by members of the Bureau of Immigration (BOI) at Shell Residences Condominium located along Pasay’s Sunrise Drive on Sunday, Manila Bulletin reported.

The BOI and the Presidential Anti-Corruption Commission (PACC) worked with Chinese authorities to track down Xie’s whereabouts.
La Yifan, the director for International Cooperation of Beijing’s Central Commission for Discipline Inspection, said that Xie allegedly embezzled funds and accepted bribes when he was a general manager of a state-owned enterprise, reported the Philippine Daily Inquirer.
BI Commissioner James Morente told ABS-CBN that Xie will be deported to China and will be banned from entering the Philippines.
Morente, along with PACC chair Dante Jimenez, turned Xie over to Chinese officials today.
But this is not the end of the BOI’s partnership with Chinese officials. Morente said that the BOI will “continue to strengthen our cooperation in going after Chinese fugitives.”
Chinese criminals planning to hide in the Philippines, take heed.
