An Indian national was arrested yesterday for selling overpriced thermal scanners in Santa Cruz, Manila.
Mukesh Chandwani, 31, was arrested in an entrapment operation conducted by the Manila Police District where he was allegedly caught in the act of selling a scanner for PHP5,000 (US$98) per piece, reports Radyo Inquirer.
The Department of Trade and Industry sets the retail price of one scanner at PHP3,400 (US$66) per unit, and the government has prohibited sellers from increasing the price of the device due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Chandwani was caught at about 12:50pm as he was about to hand over the scanners to an undercover agent who posed as a buyer, the Manila Bulletin reports. A total of four boxes containing 118 pieces of scanners worth PHP590,000 (US$11,601) was seized from the suspect.
He will be charged with violating a string of laws, including Republic Act (R.A.) No. 7581 or the Price Act and R.A. 7394 or the Consumer Act of the Philippines, reports ABS-CBN News.
