The heart-stopping photo of the Mt. Pinatubo eruption was taken on Jun 15, 1991 by Filipino photographer Alberto Garcia, the former chief photographer of Tempo, a tabloid affiliated with the Manila Bulletin.
Time, Newsweek, and Asiaweek all included the picture in the 1991 great images of the year. Then, in 1992, the picture won first place in the nature and environment category in the World Press Photo competition held in Amsterdam.
In 2014, The Huffington Post featured the photo in its article, “32 Heart-Stopping Moments You Can Only Experience Thanks To A Camera.”
