Fitness: Enjoy a Barre3 workout on your lunch break

With gurus, trainers, and even world-class athletes selling us health and sculpted bodies, the fitness industry is a minefield. Gyms and classes sprout across the city all saying that they have the best deals. We know how it feels like to be a gym or workout virgin. So to make it easier for you, Coconuts Manila will sweat it out to help you discover fun fitness activities that you can enjoy without breaking your budget, bones and self-esteem. We review anonymously and pay for ourselves.

Barre3 in Shangri-La is perhaps one of the most chic fitness studios I’ve seen. It is, after all, located inside an urban spa, complete with dimmed lights and Zen music. The reception area has a members-only vibe, which first-timers might find intimidating. But I’m given a locker key with no problems after I give them my ID in exchange.

With bright lights and an upbeat music blasting, the exercise studio itself is a stark contrast. The place is stocked with usual barre props like the ballet barre, toning balls, and free-weights. My guess is about 15 students can comfortably “pulse” their way through the workout given the space.

Barre3 is a mixture of yoga, ballet and pilates. It focuses on small but precise movements, sometimes referred to as pulses. There is stretching on the barre, muscle-burning arm swings and a lot of small, repetitive exercises. The most tiring part is having to hold certain poses which burn the muscles for strength and the much-coveted tonnage.

It isn’t cardio-heavy but some fast-paced movements will get your heart pumping. It will test your coordination, too.

All throughout the workout, students need to focus on doing the exercises properly: proper form, proper breathing, proper posture.

I attended a session with five other females from varying age groups, body types and fitness levels. The one thing they had in common? They all sported “proper” dri-fit, workout gear. I looked out of place in my comfy shirt and shorts.

If you’re used to testosterone-charged gyms, this is definitely a change of environment and pace. But those who have tried yoga or pilates before will feel right at home.

Difficulty rating: 7/10. The subtle movements are surprisingly tiring, but the instructor offers alternatives for those who want something less challenging.
Gear needed: Comfy clothes, preferably dri-fit with a touch of neon. Some students use non-slip socks but it’s not a requirement. All the exercise gear (barre, toning ball, dumbells, mats) will be provided by the studio.
Timetable: It’s a workout perfect for your lunchbreaks, especially if you work in the Ortigas area. It’s quick, and it won’t leave you feeling too tired after a session. One of the students in the class I attended rushed to a meeting after a quick change.
Shower area: This is one of the best things about this gym! They have a nice shower area with a supply of body soap.
Cost: PHP700/session (packages available; included in Kfit and Guava Pass)
Would I recommend it to a first-timer? For women, definitely. If you’re the type who is uncomfortable in gritty gyms, then this is a good alternative. The workout itself is challenging for both beginners and fitness buffs.
Would I do it again? Absolutely. The location is so convenient. The workout is challenging and unpretentious. I don’t see myself making friends with the other students because there is no opportunity to bond given the workout style. It’s nice for those who want a quick, me-time workout.
