First time in PBA history: Women referees set to officiate games

Well, it’s about time!

For the first time ever in its history, the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) is set to have female referees to work on the games.

“On Wed, Jul 13, the PBA announced that Edith Botecario, 29, and Janine Nicandro, 23, have been included in the pool of referees for the season-ending Governors’ Cup that opens on Fri, Jul 15, at the Araneta Coliseum,” reports ABS-CBN News.

The report noted: “Botecario and Nicandro were picked from 15 trainees of the PBA referees academy, which included five women, according to the league website.”

BA commissioner Chito Narvasa was quoted as saying, “We believe in the ability of women, and we want them to play a more active role in the league. I think having women referees will be good for the league long-term.”
