First Pinoy Olympic silver medalist dies

It’s a sad end for a sports hero—but we take comfort in the fact that he had many people who loved him.

“Boxer Anthony Villanueva, who came home from the 1964 Tokyo Olympics as the first Filipino to bag a silver medal in sports’ biggest stage, died in his sleep earlier this week after losing his long-running bout with various illnesses,” reports June Navarro in Philippine Daily Inquirer.

The report said Villanueva, 69, had been “bedridden for quite some time and unable to speak due to the five strokes he suffered in recent years.”

Villanueva leaves behind his wife Liezel Deldia and 15-year-old son Joey.

The report noted: “He had three more children, Avery, 43, and Agatha, 41, with his first wife, and a son, Jose, 18, with another woman.”
