Six people were killed this morning after they were trapped inside a burning hotel in Bacolod City.

City Fire Marshal Publio Ploteña told The Philippine Daily Inquirer that the fire broke out shortly after 4:30am and that the fatalities were two women and four men. He said that they found the bodies inside the hotel’s rooms, and that they appeared to have died of smoke inhalation.

He surmised that the victims were unable to find the fire exits because they panicked, Manila Bulletin reported.

Four people were also injured in the blaze, including an Australian national. All were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment, Tempo reports.

Authorities declared the fire extinguished at about 9:15am. They are still trying to determine the cause of the blaze and the overall cost of damage.
