Fire broke out in the Faculty Center of the University of the Philippines (UP) in Diliman, Quezon City, at around 1am on Fri, Apr 1.
This was reported by the university student paper, Philippine Collegian, via its Facebook page. The fire was declared under control by 5am.
Various reports say as many as 20 fire trucks arrived at the scene.
The Collegian then quoted UP Diliman Chancellor Michael Tan, who was at the scene, as saying that the fire did not reach parts of the Faculty Center’s first floor.
However, the report noted, “once the fire is completely put out, the whole building will be off limits and retrieval of any remaining property will be prohibited as the floors might collapse.”
The Faculty Center, which is also known as Rizal Hall (Bulwagang Rizal), is made largely of light materials. Only wooden walls separating the offices of most of the faculty from the College of Arts and Letters (CAL) and College of Social Sciences and Philosophy (CSSP).
As per Tan’s announcement, classes held at the nearby CAL Building are suspended today, Fri, Apr 1.
No suspension for other classes held elsewhere, he added.
