Earlier this month, animal rights activist Gabrielle Hardy created the online petition “Urge New York restaurant to stop serving balut – unborn duck fetus!” petition at Yousignanimals.org.
“Hardy was essentially saying that balut is disgusting and it should be taken off the menu of New York City restaurant Maharlika,” reports Balitang America on ABS-CBNnews.com.
Hardy had written in her petition’s explanatory statement: “The owner is really proud of selling this food, claiming it is delicious and full of vitamins and proteins essential to humans, The truth is that this food is disgusting and should not be served in a restaurant. I am therefore asking the restaurant to get balut off the menu as soon as possible!”
The report quoted Maharlika co-owner Nicole Ponseca as saying, “From where I stand, diversity in food is as important as our religious beliefs. This is not pro-balut or anti-balut. This is pro-culture, pro-Filipino, and pro-diversity.”
However, Hardy’s petition, which gained 4,665 signatures, seems to have been taken down. We have been clicking on the link and it just comes up as “Page Not Found.”
