This year’s Miss Universe pageant is shaping up to be one of the most amusing in years.
Just yesterday, a netizen by the name of Chris Bag-ao shared a collection of funny comments that Filipinos have made in reaction to candidates’ national costumes.
For non-pageant fans, here’s how it works. In most international beauty contests, there is a segment that has candidates presenting a costume inspired by their home country.
It’s one of the most anticipated pre-pageant activities in Miss Universe because candidates usually go all out — for example, the Philippines’ representative Catriona Gray actually brought a humongous Christmas lantern on stage.
But it turns out that Gray’s costume is not the most over the top. There are a few more which look even more ridiculous, prompting netizens to post hilarious comments.
Thanks to netizens’ giggle-inducing remarks, Bag-ao’s post has gone viral and has been shared more than 165,000 times.
Here are a few costumes netizens can’t get enough of.
For this costume, Queenie Remoral wrote: “This costume is brought to you by Del Monte Pineapple Juice!”
Meanwhile, Kristen Jean wrote that “Bikini Bottom is having a sample diorama,” referring of course to the cartoon character SpongeBob’s home.
Aj Balingit added in Filipino: “SpongeBob is now homeless.”
Lea Doluntap tagged a friend and wrote about the costume above: “I thought this was miswa, a type of noodle.”
Jhnmark Francisco said: “This reminds me a lot of sotanghon, another type of noodle.”
This food headdress was the subject of Justine Madelar’s joke when she wrote: “That’s what happens when food is all you think about.”
Mark Reparejo used it as an opportunity to greet: “Happy Nutrition Month.”
If you think using an image of the Angkor Wat is a great idea, wait until you read netizens’ comments. Lenna wrote: “She looks like a keychain. Love it!”
Vanessa Lacbayan wrote: “When you were the one who had to adjust and brought your home to the contest.”
This eye-catching costume led Jom Mcclure to write: “She looks like a legendary Pokemon.”
Most people loved Bag-ao’s compilation of netizen reactions.
Michael De Leon wrote: “F*ck it, Filipinos just love to make fun of other people….#laughtrip.”
Rizaleth De Asas wrote: “This just brings good vibes. I laugh so hard I got hungry!”
But someone sounded disappointed and noticed that at last one contestant was missing from the album.
Wrote Mark Unciano: “Why didn’t anyone notice Miss Philippines when she was the only one with a cart attached to her back? Is she a cow?”
Just to recap, here’s a video of Miss Philippines wearing her costume:
