Last June, a Filipino maid working in Singapore won SGD$2.3 million in the Singapore Sweep. However, someone complained to the police and claimed that the maid had stolen the winning ticket.
While the police did their investigation, the 44-year-old maid (who was not named in reports) could not access her winnings as her bank account, which had been frozen as part of the procedure.
“The police called [the Filipino maid] on Thursday evening, September 18, to tell her that her bank account is no longer frozen,” reports Aw Cheng Wei in The Straits Times.
The maid, who has been working for the same employers for 14 years, expressed relief over the result of the investigation. Police had found no sign of foul play over her winning. Moreover, her employer had also vouched for her honesty.
“I am a very simple person and I don’t want any attention. I (just happened to) strike the lottery,” the maid was quoted as saying.
The report also said that the maid will continue to work for her employer. She has set aside the money that she won for her family.
