A female Tourism student was hospitalized after being forced to join the initiation rites of a sorority in a university in Manila.
The victim’s parents rushed her to a hospital after finding out that she has huge bruises on her body and candle burns on her back.
According to investigations, the victim was first invited to the sorority in Dec 2016. She initially refused, but she eventually decided to join after receiving death threats from the members, ABS-CBN News reports.
She agreed to join the sorority on Jan 3.
The initiation took place on Jan 8. The victim thought they were only going to a harmless outing. She was asked to bring food, a candle, and a sack.
Forty members were present in the abandoned house in Las Piñas, where the victim was beaten.
She was blindfolded as four girls took turns paddling her during the initiation rites.
She was alternately hit with a belt and paddled with wood about 50 times. She was also slapped on the face several times.
Her parents found out about the incident the following day. They rushed her to a hospital in Makati.
Her family is asking the Southern National Capital Region-Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) to look into the incident.
“I thought we have an anti-hazing law? Why wasn’t the school able to protect my daughter?” her mother asked.
The victim is still confined in the hospital. She is still under observation.
