As the Catholic world is still coming to terms with the resignation and retirement of former Pope Benedict XVI, local members of the clergy can plan and prepare for their own retirement.
The Welcome Home facility is located within the compound of Our Lady of Loreto Parish in Sampaloc, Manila. Established by the late Manila Archbishop Jaime Cardinal Sin, this retirement home for priests is home to many who have long left active service.
Welcome Home Director Msgr. Vicente Dacuycuy said the residence has two elevators, a reading room, and a gym. And, since the occupants are mostly elderly, each room has its own bathroom, for their comfort and convenience.
According to reports, the Church’s Canon law states that a priest or pastor may apply for retirement when they reach the age of 75.
The home was built by the former Cardinal knowing that most priests do not have family or relatives to go back to once they retire from service.
