Use your “coconut” when you buy grated coconut.
This pretty much sums up the warning issued by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) against Diwa Grated Coconut products after they became the subject of a recall in Canada due to possible Salmonella contamination.
“The warning was issued after the FDA received a letter from the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) regarding the recall of the product in Canada, where the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) deemed the Diwa brand’s frozen grated coconut as a health hazard last August,” reports Jonathan M. Hicap in Manila Bulletin.
The affected products were the Diwa grated coconut in 16 oz. and 40 x 16 oz. case. The FDA also pointed out that “the importer of the product in Canada is Diwa Product Ltd. and the manufacturer in the Philippines is Sambel Pacific Corporation in Calamba City, Laguna, with an expired FDA License to Operate since 2007.”
