MANILA — Rain Or Shine overcame an 18-point deficit to spoil Ginebra San Miguel’s party with an 82-79 victory at the Cuneta Astrodome Sunday night.
The Elasto Painters’ victory puts them in a tie with Purefoods Star Hotshots and the Talk n’ Text Tropang Texters at second place in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup, with six wins and three loses.
RoS was coming from a 15-point loss to San Miguel Beer last Friday.
With their latest win, the Elasto Painters now have a chance to get the twice-to-beat advantage in the quarterfinals if they sweep their last two games in the elimination round.
Sunday’s match was marked by numerous technical infractions, with two fans being caught throwing plastic bottles on the floor during the last quarter.
“It’s another one of these hard, rugged, exciting games with Ginebra. You have to be physically and mentally tough when you’re playing them,” said Rain or Shine coach Yeng Guiao told the league website.
The Gin Kings dipped to fifth place, tied with GlobalPort Batang Pier, the Barako Bull Energy and the Kia Carnival — all with four wins and two loses.
Ginebra enjoyed an early lead before the Elasto Painters recovered in the last quarter. With one error after another, Ginebra fell behind ROS with only minutes left to play.
Wayne Chism scored 28 points and 17 rebounds, while Paul Lee also had a double-double with 18 markers and 11 boards.
Beau Belga, meanwhile, scored 11 points amid boos from the Ginebra crowd.
