Fans amused, PBA officials confused with Rico Maierhofer’s “shoe-pal-pal” move

We totally get why fans were amused with Barako Bull’s Rico Maierhofer’s well, innovative way of blocking his opponent.

On Wednesday during a game against San Miguel, Meierhofer used his shoe to block San Miguel’s Gabby Espinas from shooting and/or passing the ball.

“Despite the move, Maierhofer was able to get away without an immediate call from the referees,” reports ABS-CBNnews.com.

While fans of the game thought it was funny, Coach Yeng Guiao, who is not connected to either teams, had something to say about it: “It’s ridiculous,” the humorless coach was quoted as saying on a Spin.ph report. “It’s so absurd that they can let something like that go on. Kahit saan ka magpunta, may problema duon.”

The thing is though, there is nothing on the matter in the PBA guidebook. In a separate Spin.ph report, PBA media bureau chief Richard Dy was quoted as saying: “Wala sa rulebook eh. Siguro okay din kapag i-technical o hindi. Baka sa susunod na tournament committee, ibi-bring up yan or before the start of the season, kailangan gumawa ng rule changes, baka ma-tackle.”

Despite Maierhofer’s move, his team lost for the first time in the conference to SMB 116-113. He was called to the principal’s office on Thursday to explain his side.
