Was it an inside job?
“Six imitation watches and sachets of illegal drugs seized 15 to 20 years ago from passengers who flew in from Hong Kong and Bangkok were among the items taken from the display cabinet of the Bureau of Customs office at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 1,” reports Rudy Santos in The Philippine Star.
According to the report, helper Elena Fuentes, who has been working at the BOC’s NAIA office for more than 10 years, realized that the items were missing at around 10am on Tuesday, Mar 25. Fuentes added that when she checked the glass cabinet at 9am, the missing items were still there.
The report explained: “The display cabinet is located in an area exclusive to BOC personnel, but when the airport renovations started last Jan 23, construction workers also gained access to the area.” But BOC personnel emphasized they were not tagging the workers as suspects.
Customs collector Malou Rosanes revealed that they had removed the seized handguns. However, they could not take out the watches and the sachets of drugs because the lock of the display cabinet they were in was stuck.
Well, evidently, the thief or thieves had the ability to make that lock work.
