The creature is frighteningly beautiful.

“A rare Megamouth shark was found dead, washing up on the shore in Barangay Marigondon in the town of Pio Duran, Albay on Wednesday, January  28,” reports Erick Baldo on ABS-CBNnews.com.

The rare shark, which was a little over 15 feet long and weighed a ton, was found by fishermen. The carcass was brought by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) personnel to an ice plant in order to prevent its decay.

According to BFAR officials, they will subject the dead Megamouth shark to a necropsy to determine the cause of its death.

BFAR pointed out that “the rare shark was only the 15th to be spotted in the Philippines and the 66th in the world.”

The report said that the extremely rare Megamouth shark subsists on small organisms such as plankton.

For the record,  a GMA News report though, said that the Megamouth shark was actually killed when it got caught in the net of a fisherman. Perhaps, this discovery was made much later.
