Extreme heat pushes gov’t to consider moving school summer break back to April and May

Amid reports of students and teachers being sent to the hospital due to the extremely hot temperatures, the government said that it was assessing whether to move the school break period to April and May.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said in an interview that his administration was carefully studying proposals as schools have returned to face-to-face classes.

Sen. Sherwin Gatchalian also proposed that schools return to the old calendar, when the vacation period was scheduled during April and May, two of the hottest months of the year.

Public schools changed the school opening from June to October amid shifts to distance learning during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic for school year 2020-2021.

The following year, classes opened in September, while in 2022, schools began classes in August.

“We will come up with a decision very soon (on) what is appropriate,” Marcos said, adding that the government was finding ways to make schools more resilient to the impact of climate change.
