UP expert wonders why LPG gas leak at Two Serendra was undetected

A expert from the University of the Philippines wonders why the occupant of the Two Serendra condominium unit destroyed in a blast in May did not notice the smell of the supposed gas leak that caused the explosion.

Dr. Carlo Arcilla, director of the UP National Institute of Geological Sciences, said in a GMA News report that the occupant should have smelled the “mercaptan gas” included in commercial LPGs.

The smell is intentionally mixed in to warn users should their LPG tanks leak. Arcilla noted that Unit 501B tenant, Angelito San Juan, should have been able to detect the rotten-cabbage smell of mercaptan. The May 31 explosion at Two Serendra killed three people and injured at least six others.
