He seems to genuinely care for her.

“Manila Mayor Joseph ‘Erap’ Estrada reiterated during an interview on Saturday, May 16, his call to grant former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo house arrest,” reports Jose Rodel Clapano in The Philippine Star.

Estrada explained: “She (Arroyo) is no longer a flight risk. No bail is imposed to prevent an accused from escaping and evading prosecution. But with the present health status of former President Arroyo, I don’t think she will escape.”

Estrada added that he is “hoping that President Noynoy Aquino will be compassionate to Arroyo and allow her to be placed under house arrest.”

It may be recalled that Estrada also listed granting Arroyo house arrest as one of his three birthday wishes when he turned 78 years old last Apr 19.

The report noted: “Arroyo is currently detained at the Veterans Memorial Medical Center (VMCC). She has been in detention there since 2011, after being charged with the non-bailable offense of plunder in relation to alleged misuse of the PHP366-million PCSO intelligence funds.”

The report went on to recall that “Arroyo pardoned Estrada in October 2007, a month after the Sandiganbayan Special Division found him guilty of plunder.” She then replaced Estrada in 2001 after he was forced to leave Malacañang.
