Erap backs decision to suspend Torre de Manila construction

With no less than the mayor supporting the cause to maintain the beauty of Rizal Park, we hope he’d back efforts to conserve other cultural properties in the capital.

“Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada threw his support behind the council resolution calling for the suspension of the building permit of Torre de Manila, a 41-story condominium project which critics said would mar the view of Rizal Park if allowed to rise on Taft Avenue,” reports Erika Sauler of Philippine Daily Inquirer

Though he said he was still “studying” the city council resolution, Mayor Estrada nonetheless said he “more or less” agreed to its contents. He also looked at issuing a work stoppage order at the site after learning that development work was already underway.

While he was noncommittal to the cause, he promised that he would give attention to the issue, which was raised through an online campaign by tour guide-activist Carlos Celdran, whom Estrada hired as a tourism consultant when he came into office in June.
