Duterte’s tech priority: Faster internet, free WiFi hotspots in public areas

The internet connection in the Philippines is still one of the world’s slowest and most expensive, despite being the social media capital of the world (according to a global study called Wave 7),

Things are about to improve, hopefully.

President Rodrigo Duterte addressed the problem in his SONA speech on Mon, Jul 25, and promised netizens faster internet connection.

He directed the newly created Department of Information and Communications Technology — created in May, 2016, by the administration of President Benigno Aquino III — to develop a National Broadband Plan.

“[This is] to accelerate the deployment of fiber optics cables and wireless technologies to improve internet speed,” he said.

He also envisioned more WiFi hotspots offering free internet connection in public areas.

“Wi-Fi access shall be provided at no charge in selected public places including parks, plazas, public libraries, schools, government hospitals, train stations, airports and seaports,” he added.
