Duterte’s promise to informal settlers: No demolition if no relocation

When it comes to poverty alleviation, the government is in for a big challenge.

President Rodrigo Duterte reiterated his earlier promise that the dwelling places of informal settlers would not be demolished until a relocation site is provided for them.

On Sun, Jul 17, during the fellowship dinner of San Beda College of Law alumni batches 1971 and 1972 at the Palace, Duterte emphasized that he was sympathetic to the plight of the poor.

Duterte was quoted as saying, “During my time, there will be no demolition pag walang relocation. ‘Di ako papayag. Kasi kung walang mapuntahan, sirain mo ang bahay… Ano, parang aso? Eh saan pupunta yung mga tao?”

(“During my time, there will be no demolition if there is no relocation site yet. I won’t allow it. If they have nowhere to go but you still demolish their house… Would they be like stray dogs? Where will these people go?”)

“In fact, Duterte said he has instructed Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) Commissioner Caesar Dulay to be strict in collecting taxes so that the government would have more funds for its poverty alleviation programs,” reports ABS-CBN News.
