Duterte will make a plea for the life of Mary Jane Veloso but will accept Indonesia’s decision

President Rodrigo Duterte may make a plea for the life of Mary Jane Veloso, the Filipina who was temporarily spared death by firing squad in Indonesia last year.

But he added that he is willing to accept any decision on her fate.

“I may just have to ask Widodo in the most respectful and very, very courteous way and if my pleadings fall on deaf ears, I am ready to accept for the simple reason I do not doubt the judicial system of Indonesia,” said Duterte on Mon, Sep 5, during a press briefing in Davao City before he departed for Laos.

He said that he will meet Indonesian president when he visits Indonesia on Sep 8 and 9, after the Asean Summit.

The president, who is known to be a stickler for laws, said that he will be grateful that Veloso “was treated very well.”

“After all, we have laws to follow and the other way around, I might also be at the receiving end of so many pleas of mercy and I would never know what or how to react,” he said.

Mary Jane Veloso was given reprieve at the 11th hour after facing execution for allegedly carrying 2.6 kilograms of heroin to Indonesia in 2010.

Malacañang earlier said that the president might visit Veloso in jail.
