Duterte to visit quake-rattled Surigao

President Rodrigo Duterte is set to visit Surigao City on Sunday morning to personally check on the victims of the powerful earthquake that struck the coastal town, the Department of Social Welfare and Development said.

Duterte will meet with some of the victims of the tremor that left 6 people dead and over 100 others injured, DSWD Secretary Judy Taguiwalo told radio DZMM.

Taguiwalo who is currently overseeing relief operations in Surigao, said Duterte will visit the families of those who died and those who were injured in the quake.

The President, she added, is also expected to meet with local officials and check on their disaster response.

Duterte will also supervise the distribution of food packs at the city hall.

The magnitude 6.7 earthquake that rocked the city on Sunday damaged over 300 houses, several roads and bridges, and the city’s airport runway.

Power and water services remained down in parts of Surigao City and outlying towns.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has recorded over 100 aftershocks following the earthquake, including a magnitude 4.9 tremor felt in Surigao City Saturday.
