Duterte signs law on free internet in select public places

The social media capital of the world may soon get free internet.

On Wednesday, Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte signed into law the “Free Internet Access in Public Places Act,” which proposes free internet access in public places around the country.

Public places covered by the law are:

  • National and local government offices;
  • Public basic education institutions;
  • State universities and colleges, and Technical Education and Skills
  • Development Authority (TESDA) technology institutions;
  • Public hospitals, health centers, and rural health units;
  • Public parks, plazas, libraries, and barangay reading centers;
  • Public airports and seaports; and,
  • Public transport terminals.

Each user will have a minimum internet speed of two megabits per second or as prescribed by the National Broadband Plan.

The Department of Information and Communications Technology will be the lead implementing agency of the law.
