Duterte sends ‘thank you’ letter to Pope, affirms ‘special relations’ to Vatican

It’s been more than a year since President Rodrigo Duterte caused controversy for his profanity-laced remarks for Pope Francis and the traffic jam caused by his papal visit. Looks like everyone has moved on.

President Rodrigo Duterte has asked Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process Jesus Dureza to deliver a personal letter to the pontiff in Rome affirming the “special relations” of the Philippines to the Vatican. Dureza is in Rome for the 3rd round of peace talks between the government and the CPP-NPA-NDF.

“Our countrymen remember Your Holiness’ apostolic visit in 2015 with deep appreciation, knowing that it was made with the most sincere regard for the welfare of the Church’s flock. The Philippines values its special relations with the Holy See and regards with gratitude your Holiness’ gracious stewardship of the Catholic faith,” the letter read in a report by the Manila Bulletin.

The president promised the Pope his “highest esteem and respect.”

Based on the updates on his Facebook page, it looks like Dureza has already delivered the letter. The Pope promised to bless the Philippines and President Duterte.

In Nov 2015, President Duterte has already apologized for cursing the Pope. In Feb 2016, Vatican replied with a letter promising prayers for the President.
