In a text message addressed to HRW that he sent to media Tuesday night, May 19, Duterte said: “You are all hypocrites. You cannot even protect the human rights in your own country, the American-Africans (sic) and other minorities, not to mention your inutility in dealing with the genocide going on in Africa and others countries.
The report noted: “Duterte was clearly referring to the mounting furor in the US over the killings of unarmed black men by police and the massacres that accompany various conflicts in Africa.”
Duterte added, “The bleeding hearts of US-based crime watch (sic): You want a taste of justice, my style? Come to Davao City, Philippines, and do drugs in my city. I will execute you in public.”
HRW had earlier urged the government to look into Duterte’s possible link to the “Davao Death Squad,” which is deemed responsible for vigilante-style killings.
Phelim Kine, HRW deputy director for Asia, had said in a statement pertaining to Duterte, “The Philippine government should take zero-tolerance approach to any public official who publicly endorses extrajudicial killings as an acceptable means of crime control.”
