Drug tests planned for more than 26,000 teachers in ARMM

Is this necessary?

“The executive branch of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) has expressed keen interest in having all of the more than 26,000 schoolteachers in ARMM teachers examined for narcotics abuse,” reports John Unson in The Philippine Star.

If the plan pushes through, it would also set a national record of sorts.

According to John Magno, regional secretary of the Department of Public Works-ARMM, this extensive drug testing program will also include more than 3,000 non-teaching personnel of his office.

“This does not imply that we have drug dependents in our ranks. It is simply in line with the efforts of the present ARMM leadership to reform the bureaucracy and improve the efficiency of DepEd-ARMM even more,” Magno said.

Magno further explained that this bid to have all their teachers tested for methamphetamine hydrochloride (shabu) is also part of the initiative of Regional Governor Mujiv Hataman to “reconstruct” the once graft-ridden image of DepEd-ARMM into a fully functional agency with dedicated personnel.
