Thanks to Davao City’s police operation against illegal drugs, more patients have been brought to its rehabilitation centers.
But it seems the city’s facilities cannot accommodate the surge of new patients.
According to Christine Cudis of the Philippine Star, the Davao City Treatment and Rehabilitation Center for Drug Dependents has already exceeded its maximum capacity.
“The center can only accommodate a maximum of 100 residents for the existing three dormitories. We currently have an excess of 14 and a couple more coming as per court order. It’s getting crowded here,” Gene Gulanes, the center’s manager, told the Star.
Gulanes said the increase in patients is because of the “intensified anti-drug campaign of the Duterte administration.”
The report noted that center only had 80 patients last June.
Aside from issues with space, Gulanes also fears that their budget will not suffice since all patients are being treated for free.
The Star report added that Davao City Councilor Diosdado Mahipus, committee head on Peace and Public Safety, plans to build a livelihood training center for drug suspects who surrender to authorities.
