It bears repeating: don’t text and drive.
Apparently, this wasn’t obvious to this driver who accidentally hit a 5-year-old boy after allegedly using a phone while driving on Carlos Palanca St. in Quiapo, Manila, GMA News’ 24 Oras reported yesterday.
The incident was caught by the barangay‘s (village) CCTV camera. In the footage, a boy in red can be seen crossing the street when a silver van suddenly hits him.
A barangay patrol saw what happened and immediately ran to the road to inform the driver. Had he not, the accident could have been fatal as the boy’s head was already close to one of the vehicle’s rear tires.
According to Chito Torregoza, another barangay patrol, the CCTV video also revealed that the driver appeared to be using a phone while driving.
The boy’s mother told 24 Oras that she was with her son at the time but did not realize that he had wandered off.
The boy sustained minor scratches on his body and reportedly still suffers from a headache because of the hit but is generally in good condition. His family decided not to file a complaint against the driver after the latter apologized and covered all medical expenses.
