Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) personnel have unearthed solidified chunks of fat in sewers and drainage systems along Tomas Morato Avenue in Quezon City. The area is literally lined with restaurants.
The chunks of old cooking oil are from several restaurants in the area.
The DPWH believes the chunks of fat are clogging the sewers and causing floods in Tomas Morato.
DPWH said Tomas Morato also serves as a catch basin of flood water coming from higher areas.
The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) said they had the same experience in Escolta in the past where they also unearthed chunks of old cooking oil, enough to fill half a truck, from the sewers in the area.
The local government of Quezon City said they have been reminding restaurant owners to avoid disposing used cooking oil in the sewers as these may cause floods.
Aside from chunks of fat, flooding in the area is also caused by unfinished road projects in the area.
DPWH, however, gave the assurance that flooding in the area will stop once their projects are finished.
