DOTC cites ‘human error’ as cause of MRT crash

They’re also calling in foreign experts to take a look at our beloved Metro Rail Transit (MRT).

“In a press conference on Tuesday, August 19, Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) Secretary Jun Abaya announced that human error caused a defective MRT-3 train to overshoot its tracks last August 13,” reports ANC.

The accident left over 30 people injured.

The report noted: “Abaya explained that the drivers of the distressed train and the assisting train, and two more from the control center are facing administrative charges for ‘poor coordination and reporting procedures’ in the operation of the system.”

Bottom line: The MRT drivers and the control center personnel will now face administrative cases.

However, the report quoted Sammy Malunes of the group Riles Network, who pointed out that even if the MRT drivers were the best in the world, the accident would still happen because the MRT system is already “faulty.”

In any case, Abaya said that “Hong Kong’s Mass Transit Railway (MTR) operator is set to arrive next week to inspect the rail system.”
