The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) said on Thu, Sep 3, that the implementation of the free public WiFi law is now 25% complete.

DOST undersecretary Louis Casambre told lawmakers at the House of Representatives Appropriations Committee that the full implementation of the law will be achieved within the year.

There are 7,118 free public WiFi sites expected to be set up nationwide. Sites where Wi-Fi facilities will be installed include plazas and parks, public schoolyards and libraries, public spaces in rural health units, public spaces in government offices, and transport terminals.

The DOST gave the report during the agency’s budget briefing before the lower house, where they pitched for a total agency budget of PHP19.949 billion.

In an ambush interview, DOST Secretary Mario Montejo said the cost of free public Wi-Fi this year is about PHP1.4 billion.
