“The group Bilibid Atin Ito urged the Department of Justice (DOJ) to conduct surprise inspections in the maximum security compound of the New Bilibid Prison (NBP), where Chinese prisoners are allegedly living in luxury,” reports Perseus Echeminada in The Philippine Star.
The group, which sent their statement sent to The STAR, claimed that the so-called “VIP prisoners” are “living in large, air-conditioned cells or kubol with hot and cold water readily available.” The group added that the cells “are equipped with 42-inch TVs, laptops, and Wi-Fi connection.”
The group likewise alleged that the “VIP inmates” engaged in illegal drug trade and other criminal activities.
The report noted: “The STAR tried but failed to contact prison officials—Bureau of Corrections director Franklin Bucayu was out of his office for a meeting, according to his secretary, while NBP superintendent Fajardo Lansangan was reported to be in meetings that day.”
