DOE Secretary Jericho Petilla says we may experience 8-hour brownouts in 2015

We imagine it and we already feel the pain.

“Department of Energy (DOE) Secretary Jericho Petilla told everyone to prepare for seven to eight-hour brownouts as the worst case scenario of the El Niño phenomenon in 2015,” reports Charissa Luci in Manila Bulletin.

The report indicated that Petilla made the statement “when he briefed the House leaders about the looming power crisis and the urgent need for Congress to grant power to President Noynoy Aquino to contract additional generating capacity.”

Petilla explained that “under the worst case scenario, he said government needs to find an additional 1,200 megawatts (MW) of electricity next year.”

Petilla recommended that “Section 71 of Republic Act (RA) No. 9136, otherwise known as the Electric Power Industry Reform Act of 2001, should be invoked to allow the government to contract additional generating capacity.”
