“Do you even lift?” is the condescending question most gym rats you’ve come across have probably flung your way, just ‘coz. But that question is being asked today in earnest by Filipino weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz, who is inviting brave souls to a weightlifting class on April 12—while raising funds for COVID-19.
“I will be conducting an online weightlifting seminar via [Z]oom,” the 29-year-old weightlifter from Zamboanga said on her Instagram. “I’m doing this to do my part as a Filipino and to share my passion, experiences, and knowledge in weightlifting.”

To join, you’ll need to donate at least PHP500 (US$9).
“All of the proceeds will go towards pandemic relief in the Philippines,” she said.

(Note: Coconuts Manila will not be held liable if you happened to hurt yourself while undertaking this activity. We’re sure Diaz knows what she’s doing, but so should a grown-ass adult like you. Be safe about it. Lift responsibly—if that’s even a thing.)
Diaz affirmed her spot as one of the country’s top athletes when she became the first Filipina to bag a silver at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Summer Olympics, ending the country’s 20-year medal drought. She was supposed to compete in this year’s Tokyo Olympics, which has been postponed to the summer of 2021.
