DLSU Taft lit up its building in France’s colors but not everyone is happy

Following the horrific terrorist attacks on Paris last weekend, De La Salle University on Taft Avenue, Manila, lit up one of its buildings in France’s colors.

Not everyone was pleased, but we guess that’s because not everyone bothered to research the history of the De La Salle brothers which was founded in 1680 by Saint John Baptist de La Salle, who happened to be French. The educational institution wasn’t just riding on the issue.

“The St. La Salle Hall is bathed in the colors of the French flag this evening as DLSU stands in solidarity with victims of violence in Paris and the rest of the world,” announced The LaSallian yesterday on Facebook.

Some of those who criticized DLSU said the university should also support the victims of Beirut and show sympathy to the Lumads in Mindanao. Yes, maybe they should, but that doesn’t mean they should not show their support to France, right? Or does one cancel the other?

“It might not be all-encompassing to say you’ve bathed in the colors of French flag in solidarity with victims from France and THE REST OF THE WORLD,” wrote one woman with initials DB on Facebook. “It appears to me that Europe is the center and the rest are relegated to the margin.”
